Restoration Of An Abandoned Yamaha DT 250 - Genuine Barn Find!
Its been a while since you've heard from me but that's only because I've been locked in the workshop and been hard at work saving this 51 year old Yamaha DT250 or DT3 from the junkman. Its a project that was abandoned by its previous owner a long time ago and has been lying in this small barn for a long time so it really is a genuine barn find. This restoration really took a lot out of me and there were a few times I nearly threw in the towel as doing a 6 month restoration in 3 weeks is quite the challenge! anyway I hope you enjoy this episode and will leave a little like and a comment to show your support. Enjoy.

Been a professional powder coater for the last 10 years & whenever doing items & parts like this, it’s always better to pre-heat the part first..then allow to cool slightly & then apply the powder whilst the parts are still warm. This will also help the powder stick into harder to reach areas or areas into which you get the faraday effect. Just apply less powder to the part when the parts that are warm than you would normally as the powder can drip when curing. Hope this helps 😀

In my experience which isn't much more than yours. Your powder coat issue could be 2 different things. 1. A little heavy on the powder. Seems like you're doing a heavy coating when can follow same practice as regular painting. Light then heavier 2. Oven got getting hot enough. Or TOO hot. Each of these can cause orange peel

Hi I've just started watching your videos, look very good. Can I ask when you spray the cylinder, why do you not prime it with etch primer first. Iwas a paint sprayer in the motor trade fof over 35 years and always used etch on aluminium parts and not cellulose. Nice work keep if up.

I certainly don’t intend to be critical of your work but I’d like to mention your assembly of the clutch steel and friction discs . Unless the rear of the clutch basket and the face of the pressure plate have a friction material bonded to them from factory , you’ve put the clutch together incorrectly . I am not trying to say anything bad about your videos as I really love watching them . I don’t have access to a service manual for a dt 250 but unless your 100% sure you should review your segment where the clutch was assembled , metal on metal can only lead to a disaster . Sorry to point this out and if I’m wrong accept my apology , but please review your footage . 😊

I forgot to tell you yesterday why I had to service pressure washers at John Deere. Castings and welded pieces got the zinc tank treatment, while sheet metal panels were washed with a phosphatizer mixed with the hot water from the pressure washer. It has to be at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit to activate the chemical. It basically etches the metal to allow better adhesion for the powder coat application.
